Just like the human genes that its member scientists
study, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG)
derives much of its strength from the great variation in
the lives and work of its members. The ASHG provides a
scientific home to nearly committed 8000 individuals,
intrigued by the problems and mysteries of human
genetics. We are researchers, clinicians, public health
and public policy professionals, who have come to human
genetics and ASHG through a diversity of mechanisms and
mentors.
The Humans Behind Genetics is a series of interviews
with ASHG members who range from graduate students and
post-doctoral fellows to some of the most senior members
of the profession. How did they land in genetics? Who
were/are their mentors? Which career accomplishments are
they proudest of, and how do they deal with the
frustrations of research? What advice do they have for
students, mid-career and more senior colleagues? These
profiles contain the stories behind their resumes, and
should provide inspiration for readers considering a
career in human genetics to more seasoned geneticists.
